Sports Massage

At Wandsworth Physiotherapy our Sports Massage sessions consist of traditional sports massage, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM) and dry needling. This is suitable for professional and recreational athletes who experience pain and tension points in their muscles and for office workers who suffer from a stiff neck, back and shoulders. This is the type of sports massage used to prepare Premier League footballers prior to training and games.

  • 30 minute Express Sports Massage is £40 (body part)
  • 60 minute Deluxe Sports Massage is £75 (whole body)

During a sports massage deep, firm pressure is used by the therapists thumbs, hands, knuckles and forearm to kneed and stretch the muscles. The aim of this is to generate friction in the muscles, create heat and improve blood flow into the sore and tight muscles. Increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients and removes waste.

Special stainless steel massage tools are also used during this type of massage. These techniques originate from the Traditional Chinese Medicine form of massage known as Gua Sha. Now more commonly known as Graston Technique, IASTM releases adhesions in our fascia. Fascia is a type of connective tissue that envelopes our muscles, support’s our bones and organs and insulates our nerves. Using these tools stimulates cellular activity, improves lymph and blood flow and helps to relieve pain.

IASTM

Dry needling is a form of acupuncture where needles are inserted into trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points are painful taught palpable tension points in muscles commonly described by people as ‘knots’. Needling them causes a muscle fibre contraction after which the muscle relaxes. The dry needling technique also stimulates blow flow into the area, and stimulates the brain to releases endomorphins, your own natural painkillers, thus having an analgesic effect. If you do not like acupuncture you can request for it not to be performed.

Dry needling

These combined massage and needling techniques can feel somewhat painful and those who don’t like painful massage should look to book another type of massage.

Kinesio taping

Kinesio taping may also be performed to help correct imbalances and aid the effects of the sports massage. This effective taping technique allows you to get back out on the road or pitch again, or just make you more comfortable sat at your desk.
